Rheostat (biến trở công suất, power rheostat, variable resistor high power) là passive electronic component (linh kiện thụ động) dùng để điều chỉnh dòng điện bằng cách thay đổi giá trị điện trở nối tiếp trong mạch (current control variable resistance). Khác với potentiometer (dùng phân áp 3 chân), rheostat thường sử dụng 2 chân (wiper + một đầu điện trở) và được thiết kế chịu dòng lớn, công suất cao.
Rheostat hoạt động theo nguyên lý tăng điện trở → giảm dòng điện (Ohm’s law current control), thường chế tạo dạng wirewound resistor (điện trở dây quấn), ceramic core resistor, open frame rheostat hoặc rotary power resistor giúp tản nhiệt tốt và bền cơ học.
Chức năng: current limiting, load control, power dissipation, brightness control, heating control, motor speed adjustment, soft start testing, load simulation, laboratory testing resistor. Thường dùng trong industrial equipment, motor driver test bench, power supply testing, battery discharge test, educational lab equipment, lighting dimmer (resistive), heater control.
